چکیده

Cervical squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common cancer in women worldwide (zur Hausen et al., 2002). In recent years, this disease has increased gradually in China; therefore, it is very important to establish early detection of high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), which is the precursor of invasive cervical squamous cell carcinoma. It is a major challenge in screening programs for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, as some lesions may regress spontaneously and may not necessarily need treatment, while others may evolve into high-grade lesions (zur Hausen et al., 2002). Epidemiological and molecular biological studies have shown that infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV) is considered the most significant risk factor in initiating CIN and cervical squamous cell carcinogenesis, but other genetic events are necessary for a cervical precancerous lesion to progress 1Department of Pathology, The Third Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, 2Department of Interventional Radiology, The First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China, 3Department of Radiology, USC University Hospital, Keck School of Medicine of University of Southern California, Los Angeles, USA, Contributed equally : & *For correspondence : shaock2001@ yahoo.com Abstract

Clinical Role of the Detection of Human Telomerase RNA Component Gene Amplification by Fluorescence in situ Hybridization on Liquid-Based Cervical Samples: Comparison with Human Papillomavirus-DNA Testing and Histopathology.

OBJECTIVE This study was designed to evaluate whether the adjunct of human telomerase RNA component (hTERC) fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis to cytological diagnosis and human papillomavirus (HPV)-DNA testing may serve as a predictive marker for distinguishing cervical lesions destined to regress from those at high risk of progression towards invasive cancer. STUDY DESIGN hT...

Cervical cancer screening: hTERC gene amplification detection by FISH in comparison with conventional methods

Aim: To assess the clinical significance of hTERC amplification for cervical cancer screening detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and compare it with that of current screening methods within the same group. Methods: A total of one hundred and nine women were recruited in this study. All of them had liquid-based thin-prep cytologic test (TCT), human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA tes...

Human telomerase RNA component (hTERC) gene amplification detected by FISH in precancerous lesions and carcinoma of the larynx

BACKGROUND Gain of 3q26 is frequently observed in squamous cell carcinomas of mucosal origin, including those originating in the head and neck region. The human telomerase RNA component (hTERC) gene, which is located on chromosome 3q26, encodes for an RNA subunit of telomerase that maintains the length of telomeres through cellular divisions, and is activated in malignant diseases. The present ...

Detention of HPV L1 Capsid Protein and hTERC Gene in Screening of Cervical Cancer

Objective(s): To investigate the expression of human papilloma virus (HPV) L1 capsid protein, and human telomerase RNA component (hTERC) in cervical cancer and the role of detection of both genes in screening of cervical cancer.   Materials and Methods: A total of 309 patients were recruited and cervical exfoliated cells were collected. Immunocytochemistry was employed to detect HPV L1 capsid...

The detection of hTERC amplification using fluorescence in situ hybridization in the diagnosis and prognosis of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia: a case control study

BACKGROUND Currently the routine non-invasive screening methods for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and cervical cancer are Thinprep cytology test (TCT) and human papillomavirus testing. However, both methods are limited by the high false positive and false negative rates and lack of association with patients' prognosis, especially for the early detection of pro-malignant CIN. The aim ...
